Environment refers to multitude of things that we are related to, from the physical habitat we live in, to the social, behavioral aspect, we are a part of. Environmental science therefore, is an interdisciplinary field of study as it involves many different disciplines like physics, chemistry, biology, sociology, psychology etc. It is a social science at large because how we interact with environment has serious implications to it. Air, water, soil etc. are things which we can’t dream of not being used to with.

Thus, our social qualities like living in a group, formation of family and societal norms and bonds, our linguistic skills as well as the phenomenalism under which our knowledge, skills and synthesis abilities fall, all has a central role in how we define environment. Any comprehensive review of environment is therefore, not apart from subjective biases and we must mention the empiricism under which living things under a social structure grow and flourish.

Our world has experienced a rapid population growth since the latter half of 20th century. This population growth along with other effects that it led to like un-managed urbanization and industrialization, exploitation of natural resources has caused higher order of disorders to the environment. The ecological balance has been disturbed and caused many counter effects like global warming, ozone depletion and extinction of wildlife. The solution to these complex environmental problems are difficult to deal with, as these are directly threatening our lives. Upon realization of this, there have been various attempts to educate people on how we should take care of the natural resources and the environment. But in spite of all these efforts, the problems are growing intensely. It is clearly seen that our planet Earth wouldn’t be very life friendly if this rate of degradation continues for few more decades. Today, a minuscule acid rain is destroying our thousands of years old heritage, crafts and arts. A tsunami of a higher order has a potential to swallow our entire race. But with the progress in modern science, we can expect more eco-friendly alternatives in the days to come as well as be better equipped to mitigate environmental effects.

Today, one of the most crucial factor contributing to environmental degradation is the exploitation of natural resources. So, developments in alternatives sources of energy would help a lot to stop any violent doom up for future. Further, proper sewage and waste management technologies are a must, to address the problem of urbanization and environment in general.
